Research Experience

2004 08 – Clinical research at the University of North Carolina involving evaluating the rate of biodegradation of Inion Baby biodegradable plates and screws. Focus on evaluating the time period of absorption in these plates in the rabbit model. The rapid biodegradability can be applied to future surgical reconstructive procedures by avoiding the removal of the plates and by allowing normal growth in children.

2004-08 – Clinical research at the University of North Carolina craniofacial center involving the prevention of complications following cleft palate repair as it relates to the fistula rate. All patients that underwent primary palate repair from 1996 – 2005 were evaluated. Fistula rates served as one of the benchmark for successful palatoplasty. 250 palate repairs were identified during this period. In the patients operated prior to 2001, the fistula rate was 32.5%. After 2001 the fistula rate had been reduced to below 4%.

2004-05 – Clinical research at the University of North Carolina involving the long-term outcome of tracheostomy in children with Pierre Robin Syndrome and micrognathia. Respiratory distress is common at or near after birth requiring medical and surgical intervention. Many children are offered tracheostomy over other options including mandibular distraction. The purpose of the study is to survey patient families regarding the options discussed and long-term satisfaction with tracheostomy.

2004-06 – Clinical research at the University of North Carolina of a case report of patient with lower extremity trauma requiring local muscle flap and use of acticoat dressing to heal the wound. This unique approach to wound care resulted in limb salvage.

2002 – Clinical research for the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Florida. Research focused on the stage and increased depth at presentation of malignant melanoma in veterans in Florida. Education and early diagnosis in this patient population were important conclusions for improved outcome,

1999 – Clinical research at the University of Michigan, Department of Plastic Surgery. Research focused on the difficult problem of osteomyelitis in pressure ulcers and the cost of treatment with delayed diagnosis. Clinical review of 12 patients published in Advances in Skin & wound Care.

1996-97 – Biomedical research at the University of California, Los Angeles in the Department of Neurosurgery. Research focused on the selective delivery of antitumor agents to brain tumors developing bradykinin analog (RMP-7) in the Blood Tumor Barrier (BTB).

1994 – 95 – Biomedical research at the University of Michigan, Department of General Surgery. Assistant position involved performing preoperative, operative, and postoperative surgical care in animal research involving liquid ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Research aimed at improving therapeutic options in acute lung failure and Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

1993 – Medical legal Research for Physicians Plus Corporation focused on reviewing patient records, medical history, and reviewing medical literature for defense of medical malpractice litigation.

1993 – Field biological research at the University of Michigan Biological Station. The emphasis involved the utilization of the scientific method in the application to research involving ecological systems and our natural environment.

Volunteer Experience

2008 – Volunteer member of Operation Smile. Medical mission to Er-Rachidia, Morocco. We provided services including surgical management of congenital malformations, cleft lip and palate, cleft nasal deformities, and syndactyly repair.

2007 – Volunteer member of Operation Smile. Medical mission to Ascuncion, Paraguay. We provided services including surgical management of congenital malformations, cleft lip and palate, cleft nasal deformities, and syndactyly repair.

2004 – Medical mission to Moyabamba, Peru. The purpose of the mission was to provide medical and surgical services for the people of Moyabamba and surrounding mountain communities. Patients were seen in clinics as well as in the surrounding villages and healthcare provided with general and plastic surgical procedures were performed.

2003-04 – Volunteer for the University of Florida Medical Association of Pre-Health Students (M.A.P.S.) aimed at providing high school and college minority students the opportunity to gain exposure to the medical and surgical community. Mentorship included teaching on work rounds and in the operating room.

1998 – Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium Volunteer. Responsibilities included mentorship of premedical students, organization of symposium activities, and introduction of the keynote speaker, neurosurgeon Keith Black (one of Time Magazine’s “Heroes of Medicine”).

1996 – 97 – University of Michigan Wellness Committee Representative. Committee involved assistance with restructuring the curriculum and environment for medical student learning in efforts to provide mental health and improve stress management.
1992 – 93 – Organic Chemistry Tutor for the University of Michigan Comprehensive Studies Program designed to support minority retention and academic success.

1992 – 93 – Volunteer for The Michael Jordan Foundation, Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities, Special Olympics, and The Peace Neighborhood Center for underprivileged children.

1991 – Volunteer for the University of Michigan Physical Therapy/Hydro Department. Responsible for the maintenance and preparation of physical training and wound care equipment used to treat chronic wounds and assist patient rehabilitation from traumatic injury.
